river in flood

April 15, 2012

sunday stroll

The Nepean River with more water in it than we have seen for sixteen years – the flood gates at Warragamba Dam were released and the water flows into the Nepean river.

Six years ago, Warragamba Dam, Sydney’s water supply, was at 20% capacity. Late in February this year it was at 82% capacity. In early March it was overflowing. We’ve had some rain, and it has caused some damage. The trees that have been  flooded and pushed over with the force of the water are Casuarina (she-oak).

All of this rain seems like a huge outpouring of grief after over ten years of drought.
